Mexican Dental Association Assists Dental Tourists - And it's about time!

Certified Dentists Internationale’ (CDI) is the new international division of the 2 decades old Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association. CDI offers patients considering international medical and dental travel many services that will make their journey successful.

The new association was created to find patients the best medical and  dental tourism providers in popular medical tourism destinations such as  Mexico, Eastern Europe, Asia and beyond.

Dental tourism — where patients struggling to afford or find the right treatment at home head overseas — is booming, with many countries jostling to offer high-quality care at a good price. In 2013, around 900,000 Americans traveled overseas for treatment.

And that number looks set to increase: 50 million Americans were either uninsured or underinsured for dental and medical health care in 2013, according to the U.S.'s Medical Tourism Resource Guide.

However, medical and dental tourism are not the preserve of Americans — around 8 million patients from across the world seek overseas treatment each year, contributing to a global industry worth $24-$40 billion, says Patients Beyond Borders.

Reasons other than cost to travel overseas for health care include better treatment, as well as avoiding long waiting lists and dodging questions from colleagues and family.

For many American middle-class families - dental emergencies and large treatments such as oral restorations are a huge, uninsured family budget wrecking event. And many are going without treatment and ending up in hospital emergency wards which are unable to provide proper dental care. 

Dental care in the US is increasingly becoming something that only the upscale segment of society can afford causing many to leave the US on “Dental Vacations” to Mexico and Asia to find affordable dental care. -ed

With dental costs rising and employers cutting dental coverage, an increasing number of working Americans cannot afford to see a dentist even for chronic problems. If you need a full-mouth restoration, several root canals, 27 crowns or dental implants - most dental insurance won’t cover you.

During the Iraq war, some reservists and Guard members chose to have their teeth pulled so that they could be deployed, said Maj. Gen. Robert A. McIntosh,in testimony before Congress.

"Although promised restorative dental work, their reward for their loyalty and patriotism will be dentures," he said. Dental implants, a better alternative to dentures, are not covered because they are more expensive.

In a nation where a person's smile is considered a sign of general well-being and an important factor in landing a job, dental care is becoming ever more unequal, policy specialists say. In 2000, the Surgeon General issued a report describing the silent epidemic of dental and oral diseases.
