DENTAL TOURISM EXPLAINED by CNBC, Reuters

DENTAL TOURISM - What's a Dental Vacation? ARE YOU KIDDING?

Dental travel, dental holidays - Facts and info for the dental tourist by CNBC

Dental tourism — where patients struggling to afford or find the right treatment at home head overseas — is booming, with many countries jostling to offer high-quality care at a good price. In 2013, around 900,000 Americans traveled overseas for treatment.

And that number looks set to increase: 50 million Americans were either uninsured or underinsured for dental and medical health care in 2013, according to the U.S.'s Medical Tourism Resource Guide.
However, medical and dental tourism are not the preserve of Americans — around 8 million patients from across the world seek overseas treatment each year, contributing to a global industry worth $24-$40 billion, says Patients Beyond Borders.

Reasons other than cost to travel overseas for health care include better treatment, as well as avoiding long waiting lists and dodging questions from colleagues and family.

Some Cosmetic Dentists Are Like the 3 Stooges -

The American Dental Association Says Cosmetic Dentistry is not a dental specialty... But the 3 Stooges think it is.

In the US - cosmetic dentistry is not an American Dental Association (ADA) recognized specialty and any dentist can purchase a dental whitening machine, double their prices overnight and call themselves a Cosmetic Dentist. Some join the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists and hang the AACD membership certificate on their salon wall for added credibility.

Anyone can join the AACD so long as they pay the membership fees.  Dental students, dental lab technicians, dental suppliers, general dentists and even the 3 Stooges would be welcome.

Consumer protection laws in the US have not caught on to the cosmetic dentistry gimmick that many general dentists in the US use to promote themselves with.  How can they be charged with misrepresentation when cosmetic dentistry does not exist in the eyes of the American Dental Association?

To become a certified cosmetic dentist In Mexico, one has to attend a dental specialist college for another 2 years beyond the 4 years of basic dental college (and 1 year public service in a government clinic) to become a Certified Cosmetic Dentist.

True cosmetic dentistry can involve dental implantology, periodontics, endondontics and other fields with an emphasis on aesthetics as well as functionality.

In the USA a general dentist is not permitted to perform implants or crowns unless they have graduated from the appropriate dental specialist school. But they can (and do) call themselves cosmetic dentists because the specialty field according to the ADA doesn't exist.

In Mexico many general dentists play with terminology and call themselves implant or endodontist specialists etc and quite often they are not. They may not be certified in any specialty.

In Mexico - it gets worse - as general dentists are permitted to learn advanced dentistry at the patients expense and peril. (Read that again).  The only way to protect yourself is to search for a board certified dentist in Mexico, Asia or any other place you want to have your denture adventure.

No dentist anywhere, any place,  on either side of the border can call themselves Board Certified unless they are without risking the loss of their license.

Board Certification comes after graduating from dental specialist college and taking the Board exams - written, lab demonstrative and oral. Only 1% of dentists are Board Certified. They are the best of the best and the ones you want when you go on your dental vacation.

But if you want a board certified cosmetic dentist - you may have to go to Mexico or elsewhere beyond the US where they are formally trained in the field and boards exist to certify them.

Board Certified Dentists Internationale CDI (is the newly combined Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association and it's Asia counterpart Board Certified Asia Dental Association.
